Press Releases

Daily we can see a stream of press releases from government, civil society, and professional organizations. The Associated Press (apnews.com) often picks up these stories, and media outlets then republish the AP News stories.

Some examples

“Beloved monarch butterflies now listed as endangered” by Christina Larson (Global Science & Environmental Writer) which is just writing about the press release, “Migratory monarch butterfly now Endangered – IUCN Red List” from Gland, Switzerland on July 21, 2022.

What am I supposed to do?

In the first article on butterflies, the article starts out by saying the problem is caused by commercial logging and agriculture. So right off, why are you telling me this? I can’t do squat about commercial logging & agriculture, so why even bother having everyone read this? Environmentalists have been working to shut all this down for decades, and nothing has changed. It’s already clear what they’re doing with this article.

Later in the article they say “there are signs of hope” right after saying the western population has declined 99.9%. There’s no hope when you’re saying numbers have declined from 10 million butterflies to under 2000. They’re toast, period and you’re an idiot if you think your personal actions can do anything. Then they make suggestions in a vague way about planting milkweed, reducing pesticides, protection of overwintering sites, and contributing to community service. Can my actions fix the issue? No, of course not.

So let me understand this. The issue is really commercial logging and agriculture, but you’re telling me planting milkweed would help? No, the damage is already done by agriculture & logging, and I had nothing to do with that. Of course they keep it vague, so they can deny that they ever said personal actions can help. How do they want you to react

This is all intentional. They want you to have the usual reactions:

They just want you to play your part in perpetuating this globalized system of government & industry by interacting with the system, thereby giving it (the government & corporations) legitimacy.

You, as somebody at home, just become a pawn in the game. You can repost this on Facebook, go to your local nursery to buy milkweed, start volunteering locally, join an environmental group to try to make something happen. Or worse yet, you can become part of the machinery by joining civil society or government, thus becoming part of the blob. But ultimately, will things change in the bigger picture? Not a chance. Don’t waste your time by working with the system to address any of these issues.
